Day Two

The Second-Day Curl Refresh That Doesn't Cause Frizz

Reworking curls without a full wash is possible, but the technique depends on how your hair dried the first time.

Day-two curls are the real test of a routine. Hair that looked defined on wash day often collapses or frizzes overnight, and the fix depends on how it dried.

Protect first

Most day-two problems start at night.

Pineapple. A loose, high ponytail that keeps curls piled on top of the head. Loose enough not to stretch the pattern.

Satin or silk scarf or pillowcase. Cotton grabs the cuticle and creates frizz.

Do not sleep on wet hair if you can avoid it — the pattern flattens and the cuticle roughens.

Refresh by hair type

Wavy, fine hair. Usually needs the least. A spritz of water mixed with a little leave-in, scrunched into the ends. Roots left alone.

Medium curls. Steam is more effective than water. Shower steam for a minute, then scrunch in a small amount of leave-in or a curl refresher.

Coily hair. Often needs no water at all. A light oil or butter on the ends, then fluff at the root with fingers.

The technique

  1. Do not wet the roots unless you plan to re-dry them. Wet roots equal frizz.
  2. Apply product to damp ends only.
  3. Scrunch upward, do not rake through. Raking breaks clumps.
  4. Let it air dry, or diffuse on low if you need speed.
  5. Do not touch while drying. The single biggest frizz cause.

Products that work for refresh

Water plus leave-in in a spray bottle. Cheapest and most controllable.

Curl refresher sprays. Convenient, often overpriced for what is essentially diluted conditioner.

A small amount of the original gel, diluted. Restores hold without re-wetting the whole head.

Lightweight oil for coily hair. Seals without water.

What not to do

  • Do not re-wash unless you need to. Frequent washing strips the scalp and dries the ends.
  • Do not brush dry curls. Ever.
  • Do not pile on more product to fix frizz — it adds weight and produces buildup.
  • Do not use a terry towel.

How long you can stretch

With a good night routine and a light refresh, most curly hair goes three to four days between washes. Coily hair can often go a week. Fine wavy hair is usually two to three days.

Bottom line

Protect at night, refresh only the ends, use steam rather than water where possible, and do not touch while it dries. Most day-two frizz is a night-time problem.

Frequently asked

How do I refresh curls without water?

Steam. Hold your head in shower steam for a minute, or use a steamer, then scrunch. Water alone re-activates frizz on some hair types.

Why do my curls go flat on day two?

Usually product weight or sleeping on them. A pineapple (loose high ponytail) with a satin scarf preserves volume better than a pillowcase.

Can I refresh without re-wetting the roots?

Yes, and you should. Roots re-wet become frizzy; focus on mid-lengths and ends.
